Though specializing in athletic training, Koru Personal Training also offers comprehensive nutrition and exercise plans for those looking to get leaner, stronger, healthier and happier. Navigating health and fitness information to figure out what’s best for you can be overwhelming, leading you to jump on the latest craze that, in many cases, can leave you in a worse state-of-mind and body from when you started. Let Koru Personal Training do the science-based research for you to develop a personalized, sustainable exercise and nutrition plan to help you achieve your health and wellness goals.

What does “koru” mean?

“Koru” is Maori for a spiral shape based on an unfurling fern frond of the native New Zealand silver fern. It symbolizes new life, growth, strength and peace. The circular shape of the koru conveys the idea of perpetual movement, while it’s inner coil, the corm with rolled-up inner leaflets, suggests a return to the point of origin.

I believe that health and fitness is all about growth and change, new beginnings and returning to a balanced state.

Our culture has shifted so far and so quickly from our point of origin that our bodies have not been able to catch up—we sit at desks instead of physically using our bodies to make a living; we drive cars instead of walk to get around; we have easy access to all the salt, sugar and fat we want just down the street at the grocery store or the drive thru instead of finding it occasionally in nature. Since our bodies cannot change fast enough to keep up with modern culture, we must continue to move, grow and adapt to stay healthy, happy and balanced in our environment.

I feel a close connection to New Zealand (half of my family is from there) and the fern frond; ferns are a common sight on my trails runs here on the west coast of Vancouver Island, so it seemed fitting to call my coaching business Koru Personal Training. I believe the koru shape is the perfect metaphor and mission statement for Koru Personal Training, and is the essence of what I strive to help my clients achieve.
