#WorkoutWednesday: Ultramarathon strength training program for trail runners (Part I)

finlayson-summitLast week I shared my 25K trail race training plan, and aside from the usual mid-week and weekend long runs on the trails, you might have noticed I also included three days of strength training per week. Just as strength training is important for runners training for marathons held on paved roads, it’s also important for runners racing on the trails — even those racing an ultra distance.

Although fitting strength training in to ultramarathon training can be tricky, it’s doable and totally worth it. According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, some of the benefits of adding strength training to marathon training include faster recovery from injury, prevention of overuse injuries (which is one of the most common injuries ultrarunners experience), and a reduction of muscle imbalances. Besides providing preventive benefits, strength training can also help runners increase their power output, which comes in handy when climbing hills. (more…)

Life In LeggingsHappy Friday, friends! How was your week? Even though this week was a short one for me it felt like it was never going to end. Last weekend I got to see one of my best friends get married before jetting off to Vancouver the following day for a Shania Twain concert (Yes, Shania Twain. I love her. Don’t judge me), then had a very busy week at both jobs. I can tell my introverted self needs a bit of a slower weekend to recharge. So other than some causal hang-outs with good friends on patios, I plan to take it easy this weekend!

My new website!

I’m super excited to announce I’ve finally launched my coaching and personal training business, Koru Personal Training! I will be offering one-on-one online and in-person personal training and coaching, marathon training plans, nutrition guidelines and more.

Although I specialize in strength and conditioning training for athletes, I will also be offering fat loss and muscle building programs, functional movement training and online coaching support.

If you live in the Victoria area and want private, one-on-one personal training for a price comparable to that offered at a commercial gym, I will be training at Victoria Professional Self Defence, located at #201-1420 Quadra Street.
