Happy Friday, friends! Here are five things I’m excited about this week.
1. I woke up to a very rare sight this morning.
I’m so happy today is my flex day. I don’t plan on going anywhere — people in Victoria don’t know how to drive in the snow and we don’t have the infrastructure to deal with it, so it’s best to avoid driving anywhere if possible when it snows here. It also doesn’t help that we live on a hilly, twisty road that’s always the last to get plowed and de-iced. We had a bit of snow earlier this week and I was sliding all over the place trying to get from my house to the main road to work. Needless to say I’m glad I don’t have to go anywhere today, and get to spend the day playing in the snow with the dogs, doing a bit of writing and baking cookies. (more…)
I had planned to post a few informative fitness and health related blogs last week, but I just didn’t have the motivation to write. To be honest, I was at a loss for words over the election in the states, and writing a blog post about my favourite protein bars or the most effective strength training exercises for your glutes just didn’t seem like the best use of anyone’s time (me writing, anyone reading). My concern and sadness for women, minorities, the environment, the future for our children and humanity in general took up more space in my brain than I could deal with last week, and I just needed to disconnect and think.
I got into the health and fitness business to help others — to share my experiences and use my skills to do something meaningful and fulfilling with my time. And while it’s still important to me and something I enjoy to do, I’ve lost that initial passion somewhat. I’ve been thinking about what to focus on next — what I can do to make a bigger impact, either in the health and wellness industry or elsewhere.
After several weeks of researching options and talking to friends and colleagues, I’ve decided to go back to school and do a masters degree next September. Not only to hopefully open more doors career-wise, but also for the opportunity to challenge myself and get exposed to global issues. I’m about 99% set on doing an MBA, but an MPA is also an option since I work in government.
The downside to this, of course, is probably zero time to write blogs and fitness articles come September. But we’ll see, depending on the program I choose to do. Both programs offered at the University of Victoria (where I did my undergrad) have a weekend or online option, which I would do so I can continue to work full time.
So that’s my big life update. And even though I called this post Five Things Friday, I don’t really have five things to hare. But here are two more things that happened this past week. (more…)
Happy Friday, friends! I’m finally feeling back to normal after my pre- and post-marathon illness and got back into the gym this week to do some light circuit training and short treadmill runs. I’d say my body is about 80% recovered and I’m actually itching to start running again, which isn’t usually the case after a hard marathon.
The only good part about being home for most of last week (well, aside from resting and taking the time to get better) was that I was around to receive a few protein bar samples that came my way in the mail to try.
Here are a few new protein bars I tried this week, as well as three of my trusty go-to bars I keep on hand when I need an afternoon snack at work or something quick after a workout.(more…)
Every day has been like a flexy Friday for me this week because I’ve been on vacation since last Thursday. Instead of packing up to go camping again after Sunfest we decided to stay home and do things around the house. I had a ton of freelance to do this week so I agreed, on the condition that we get to take to dogs out to Mystic Beach today. It will be Gus’ first trip to the beach, so follow me on Instagram if you love puppies and want to see 45378 videos of them frolicking in the ocean.

Since I powered through a lot of freelance this week I might actually have more time to do fun things this weekend. I’d like to buy some more plants and herbs for the patio and tidy up outside a bit more before BBQ season… maybe go to Home Depot, or maybe Bed, Bath & Beyond but I don’t know, I don’t know if we’ll have enough time… (more…)

I’m running Beat the Blerch! Timing never worked out for this race for me before–which I’ve been dying to do since The Oatmeal‘s Matthew Inman first announced it–but this year it will fit perfectly into my third-time’s-a-charm BQ attempt at the Goodlife Victoria Marathon in October. I’ll be doing the half and using it as a speedy race-prep race, though I’ll probably have to stop and take photos of blerchs and to eat birthday cake. Because how could you not. Also, heading to Seattle means a stop a the Oiselle store (sorry, bank account). Is anyone else planning to do it?? (more…)
Happy almost Saturday, friends! And happy April Fool’s, I suppose?
I was hoping to post more this week, but with moving and unpacking and freelance work taking up the majority of my “free” time right now, I just haven’t felt motivated to sit down and write. I still don’t, so I’m going to make this short and sweet 🙂
1. I’m starting to get some upper body strength/definition back thanks to my new strength training program. I’ve been pretty consistent with it since I got back from vacation in early March, and will continue it for another month until I mix up the reps, sets and weight a bit.
2. I’ve only done a handful of 5 km runs since the marathon, and they’ve been pretty sloggy — I can tell it’s time to go running shoe shopping (I’m way overdue as I’ve run two marathons in this pair that I’ve had since October). It also doesn’t help that pollen is literally coating EVERYTHING in sight right now and I’m having a hard time breathing outside. The only good things about my runs lately are that it’s light out enough after work to hit the trails, the weather has been beautiful and I’m treated to scenery like this: (more…)
I have random pieces of news to share that you may or may not be interested in, so what better way put it out there than with a Five Things Friday post?
My profile is finally up on Get Out There Magazine’s website, so all (50? 60?) of my articles are linked at last. I’ve been writing for them on a regular basis since 2015, from general fitness articles to web promotions to content for other event sites they manage. Even though it takes up a good chunk of my time, writing consistently helps to keep my skills sharp and builds my writing resume. Plus, it’s fun to research Canadian-based endurance events and activities, such as wine runs, food runs and naked yoga classes, haha.
