Hello 2018: My annual non-New Year’s resolution blog post

Welcome to another edition of my annual non-New Year’s resolution blog post, where I list my top three goals for the year to come: one fitness-related, one professional, and one personal.

I started publicly sharing my goals back in 2012 as a way to keep myself accountable, but also so I could look back and see where I was at the time fitness-wise, professionally and personally.

My 2012 and 2013 years were tough professionally and personally, as I was leaving one long-term relationship and moving into another, and transitioning from a tough contract job into a government position. In 2011 I completed my first triathlon and was a running machine, signing up for almost every local race I could afford. But in 2013 my focus shifted, and for some reason I made it my goal to “have abs” in 2013. I’m glad I decided to run my first ultra instead. That’s a much more bad-ass goal.

In 2014, I actually achieved all the goals I set out for myself, which I was super proud of — especially getting published (and featured!) in a print magazine and qualifying for Boston. In 2015 I did okay, but as I explained in this post, I was having another “transition” year, as I like to call it — where a lot more stuff was going on than what was shared on this blog.

Although I completed zero of my goals for 2016 (I missed qualifying for Boston twice — I got injured at the Phoenix Marathon in February then missed it again by 12 seconds at the Victoria Marathon in October; I pretty much forgot about writing a book proposal; and I did not pay off 50% of my debt – although I did set up an aggressive payment plan and opened an RRSP), it was a much better year overall. Matt and I had a blast at Disneyland and Vegas in February. We finally moved in together. We added another furry child to our pack (Gus the English Springer Spaniel). I went to BlogFest and got to meet all my favourite wellness bloggers IRL. More friends got married and had babies. All my family and friends stayed healthy. I stayed healthy. I had close to 160 freelance fitness articles published online and four published in print.

In 2017, I was a bit more general with my goals. I thought I would be going back to school to do an MBA (I applied to the program, got in, but decided at the very last minute not to do it because I didn’t want the extra debt. Honestly, the only reason I wanted to go back to school because I love learning and thought it was what I needed to do to get a better paying job. Turns out that’s not true!). I also planned to read lot of books and go on lots of trail runs and hikes (check!). I planned to make more time and space for friends and family (check!), and to only do things in my spare time I truly enjoyed (check!). I also made a point to love my body more, which happened later in the year when I decided to take a break from food restrictions and exercise for several months in order to restore balance, both physical and mentally. My work clothes might not fit right now, but that’s why we have lululemon, am I right ladies??

Other things that happened this year that were amazing:

–          Got engaged to the love of my life (!)

–          Hosted the wedding of my sis-in-law-to-be at our house

–          Discovered lots of new trails to explore

–          Ran a decent half marathon time and had a blast at Seaweeze

–          Took a 250-hour yoga teacher training program (I suppose I did go back to school to learn something new in September after all)

None of those things, except for Seaweeze, were goals I set at the outset of 2017.

For 2018, I do have one fitness and one professional goal in my sight.

Fitness-wise, I signed up to train with Kyla Gagnon for the next six months to get wedding ready; I see this as the one time I actually want to train for an aesthetic goal and feel awesome on my wedding day, so that is what I’m going to do. I’ve also never had a trainer and have always created my own programs, so I’m excited to let someone else take the reins for a while. There will definitely be less running and more yoga this year, along with my strength plan from Kyla.

My professional goal is two-fold. First, I’m going to set a budget and stick to it so I’m not scraping by after the wedding. In order to do that (aside from a shopping ban except for wedding-related items), I’m pushing myself to get out there and develop professionally. That means teaching yoga once I take my certification course, applying for higher-paying and more challenging positions, and perhaps taking on more personal training clients again. That said, I don’t want to burn myself out like I did before, so if I end up with a new position at work, my focus will be to save instead of spend. Having extra time with family and friends has been so worth it this past year, so I’m reluctant to take on extra side hustles just to make a few bucks.

My personal goals for 2018 will be the same as last year. I want to keep learning, loving and living to the best of my abilities. To continue to make time and space for family and friends. To appreciate the little things and to stay humble. To keep moving. To love my body more. To truly come into self-actualization. To only do things in my spare time I really enjoy and ditch the rest. To ask myself daily if my actions are serving myself or others in a positive way, and if not, to stop doing those things. To be gracious and giving. To make a difference in someone’s life for the better (be it an animal, nature or a person). To be a lighthouse – steady and strong in my convictions to draw others to the light. To be fearless and open-minded.

I have a feeling 2018 will be amazing. And not just because it’s going to be all about wedding planning and family and honeymooning (although that plays a big part) — I can just feel it. I feel like myself, my friends, family and our collective community will wake up a bit more; will be more compassionate, kind and open-minded thanks to the turbulence and horror of world events last year. I feel like yoga will play a big part in that. I don’t know how, but I can just feel it.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.
