Running to BQ and running for a good cause

At this time last year, I was coming to terms with the fact that even though I qualified to run the 2016 Boston Marathon in 2015 with 1 minute and 3 seconds to spare, I did not make the cut off that was capped at runners who were 2 minutes and 28 seconds faster than their qualifying time.  The cut-off times for the 2017 Boston Marathon have yet to be announced, but my fingers and toes are crossed for those who are in the 5-minute plus registration category and are eagerly awaiting to find out if they will be one of the lucky 30,000 runners toeing the line in Boston in 2017.

Even though qualifying is an accomplishment in itself, I know it sucks to hear the experience you worked so hard for and achieved does not pan out the way you planned. Since I had a horrible second BQ attempt at the Phoenix Marathon in February, I’m not one of those people eagerly checking my inbox this time around – but I hope to be at this time next year after my third BQ attempt in 11 days.

So far training has gone really well, nothing hurts (knock-on-wood), I’m not sick and I’m feeling confident about qualifying again. Of course, there’s still 11 days to go and that could all change like it did last year, when I hurt my foot and got a head cold 5 days before the race. I ended up qualifying, but just barely. It made me wonder how I would have done if I wasn’t sick and injured.

I’ve considered going to charity route with Boston, but don’t think I could raise the $5,000 required to run on a charity team. I’m terrible at asking for money, which is why I don’t do a lot of fundraising runs or events and instead give to other initiatives where I can.

Even though the bulk of my marathon training is over and I’m a horrible fundraiser, I still plan to log 100 miles this October for the If Girls Ran the World event with my fellow Sweat Pink sisters. With a handful of short training runs left and the marathon on October 9, I should have run close to 62 miles by mid-October. Although I usually take a break from running after a marathon, I plan to keep going until I reach the 100 mile milestone and raise at least $250 to Every Mother Counts as part of the campaign. Every Mother Counts does fantastic work to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. Now that I’m at that age where all my close friends already have or are ready to have babies, the thought of going through pregnancy and delivery without a team of top-notch healthcare providers by your side is frightening. So much can go wrong, and I can’t imagine what it would be like to be pregnant without proper healthcare and support. I’m thankful to live in a country where this isn’t as much of an issue, and love what Every Mother Counts does to ensure all women all over the world have access to a similar level of support.
