2016 goals update: Six-month check in!

2016 goals updateYou know you’re probably not on track with the goals you set out for yourself in January when you can’t even remember what they are.

Since we’re half way to 2017, I thought I’d review the goals I set out for myself earlier this year to see how much progress I’ve made, and whether or not I should revisit and revise my goals for the year. A lot actually changed in January after I set out these goals (moved in with Matt, started a new job, secured some consistent freelance, got a new puppy), so I’m not too upset by my progress so far… which is essentially nada.

Let’s have a look at those goals, shall we?

  1. Fitness goal: Qualify for the Boston Marathon at the Phoenix Marathon on February 27, 2016 with a time of 3:29:00 or faster AND ACTUALLY GET IN TO RUN BOSTON IN 2017.
    June update:
Soooooo this didn’t happen. I got injured at mile 13 and had to walk/job the rest of the way. That said, my plan is to try again in October at the Goodlife Victoria Marathon (the race that I BQ’ed at before). Marathon training starts up again in July. So there’s still a chance of a BQ this year — just not to run Boston in 2017.

Hard earned medal! I had to have my bag searched when I took it through security as it looked like a weapon on the bag scanner, haha.

  2. Professional goal: Have a draft book proposal ready by December 31, 2016.
June update: I honestly haven’t given a book proposal much thought since January, when freelance really started to pick up. I’m enjoying the writing I’m doing right now and get paid for it, so it’s hard to set aside time to work on a book concept. I might try to put together a short, cheap eBook to start sometime over the winter, but I’m still not entirely sure what I’d like it to be about. If freelance slows down I’m sure I’ll shift my creating writing juices into this project eventually.

Have a handful of published articles in all of these magazines!

  3. Personal goal: Pay off 50% of my total debt (which doesn’t include a mortgage as I rent) by December 31, 2016.
June update: Uhhhhh… I have no idea how I’m doing with this goal. I made a few budgets in January and February, discovered I was spending close to $1,000 a month in groceries and made a concerted effort to cut back. I’ve also doubled my student loan payments, and am earning a bit more money thanks to a new position and steady freelance. But… we also went on an epic Disney/Vegas vacation, went outlet shopping a few times, and just bought a puppy from the states. I also have to pay for plane tickets and hotel for Blogfest this July, plus our upcoming Sunfest concert weekend. I’m making small dents, but definitely not paying off as much as I’d like to. Hopefully after the summer the spending will slow down a bit.

  4. Bonus goal: Continue to sit quietly in meditation for a least 5 minutes per day and keep not giving a f*ck.
June update: I’m definitely nailing the not giving a f*ck part. But all but stopped meditating as I haven’t felt the need to do it. Running here in my new neighbourhood in the forest and on country roads, working in the garden and being surrounded by green and nature and cedar trees has been my daily meditation lately. So I guess you could say I’m on track with my bonus goal?

My happy place. I always make time to get out in nature with the dogs.

Other than trying to be better with my finances and qualify for the Boston Marathon, I probably won’t work too hard on achieving the other goals I set out for myself, as I’m pretty happy with how the year has turned out so far.

Do you set yearly goals? How are you doing with your 2016 goals? Are you on track or do you plan to revise them?
