The kind folks over at Vega sent me a few samples packs of their new Sport Performance Protein to try last week, which of course I was super stoked about because I already use most of their product line and love it all. Since I don’t eat four-legged animals and consume minimal poultry and fish, I use Vega to meet my daily protein, essential amino acid and iron requirements and to help my body recover properly from marathon training and strength training.
In fact — and according to my doctor — if I wasn’t using Vega I’d probably be anemic right now, since I already eat a ton of iron-rich plant foods such as spinach, goji berries, dark chocolate, whole grains, nuts and legumes every day (especially the dark chocolate part). He told me this after I had my blood tested last week — apparently I’m just staying afloat iron-wise with a ferritin level of 18 (since my hemoglobin is good I’m not anemic), but I have nothing left in the tank. He told me I should keep doing what I’m doing but could benefit from a 60mg dose more per day, so I opted to get a ferrous sulfate supplement to stock up my iron reserves. Otherwise I’d be drinking Vega smoothies (or eating animals, which I won’t do) for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
But anyway — on to the review!
NEW Vega Sport Performance Protein
Nutritional Profile: With 30 grams of plant-based protein, 6 grams of BCAAs, 6 grams of glutamine, tart cherry, probiotics and turmeric per serving, the new formula is your perfect post-workout recovery drink. Protein, BCAAs and glutamine help your body repair all those muscles you broke down during training, and tart cherry and turmeric will help to reduce inflammation. One serving also has 30% of your daily iron value, which is great news for us female endurance athletes. Even though it’s too cold for smoothies right now, I’ve been having one after my long marathon training runs lately and have been feeling awesome post-run. Cold, but awesome.
Texture: The new formula blends up really well in either a shaker cup or as part of a smoothie as it’s really fine — it practically dissolves in liquid before you even get a chance to mix it. No grittiness whatsoever!
Taste: Since it blends up so nicely, I find the flavour much improved over the original. I LOVED the mocha. The berry was yummy as well, but I couldn’t tell if that was from the other fruits I mixed it with or the protein powder itself. I have another pack so I might try it just on its own. The chocolate was also good, but not as chocolaty as I’d hoped. Next time I’ll add a tablespoon of cocoa powder to up the chocolate factor in my chocolate banana peanut butter smoothie!
Verdict: Love it. Not only does it taste great, but also it’s nutritionally superior when compared to other protein supplements. In fact, Reviews.com rated Vega’s Sport Performance Protein as one of the top three protein powders available on the market right now. It’s definitely my new go-to post-workout/post-long run protein powder of choice!
