Today I’m linking up with Jess from Hello to Fit and Ivanna from Petite Heartbeat for Try This Thursday to share my thoughts on Vega’s new Vega One Nutritional Shake flavours: Mocha and Coconut Almond!
Two weeks ago a rep for Vega reached out to me after I expressed interest in trying their new mocha nutritional shake flavour — I honestly hadn’t seen it available anywhere locally at that point (apparently it is available almost everywhere in Canada now but only at Whole Foods in the states), so I thought, awesome, I’d love to try a sample. I provided my shipping address and this amazing box of goodies showed up at my doorstep…
Even though I’m a whole-foods, plant-based advocate, I love smoothies and find adding protein powder is one of the easiest (and tastiest) ways to get in an adequate amount of protein for my muscle-building goals. I’ve loved and have used Vega to fuel my endurance sport endeavors since forever — before it was even called Vega, I think. I met Brendan Brazier six years ago through my employer at the time (an Ironman triathlete who happened to be friends with him) when he gave a talk to a few of us in the marketing department on sports nutrition. I had just got into triathlon training at the time, so I was stoked to try his new endurance bars and natural sport drink mixes. A year later, I was sent their brand new sport endurance line of products to test out and review (right around the time I started this blog, I think), but had to decline due to a job I had in the triathlon events industry at the time. It’s been awesome to see how much this Vancouver-based company has grown since then, adding momentum to the plant-based movement.
But anyway. On to the review!
I’ve tried almost every Vega product and flavour of smoothie mix available, and I must admit these two are my current favourites.
The mocha is rich and chocolaty with just a hint of coffee flavour, and the coconut almond smells and tastes like a piña colada. Aside from the awesome nutritional profile (160 calories, 20 grams plant-based protein, 6 servings of greens and 50% of your daily intake of food-based vitamins and minerals), these two flavours are super versatile. I tried them in a few different smoothie combinations and even whipped up a batch of brownies with the mocha flavour. Here are my two favourite smoothie recipes so far:
Simple Mocha Shake
- 1.5 cups of ice
- 1 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 TBSP cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup of cold brewed hazelnut-flavoured coffee
- 1 scoop of Vega One Mocha Nutritional Shake mix
Coconut Almond Matcha Shake
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 TSP matcha green tea powder
- 1-2 leaves of kale
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1/2 cup water or coconut water
- 1.5 cups ice
- 1 scoop Vega One Coconut Almond Nutritional Shake mix
Just throw everything in a blender and set to smoothie mode!
I also whipped up these amazingly simple yet delicious three-ingredient flourless brownies using this recipe from The Big Man’s World blog, but added a scoop of the Vega Mocha mix. They’re SO yummy and only about 200 calories for a big-ass piece.
Overall, I give these new flavours a 10 out of 10. Versatile, animal-friendly, nutritious and tasty.
What’s your favourite Vega product? Which of these flavours would you most like to try? Do you use nutritional supplements such as protein powders, bars or gels? What are your favourite kinds? Also, if you have a yummy recipe I could try with these two shake mixes, please share below!
